Las Cordilleras

El Retiro, Antioquia

Text

Our agricultural objective maximizes the useful connections between the earth, plants, animals, and humans. Our synergistic approach seeks to minimize waste, human labor, and energy input by combining systems that produce high density food and other resources with minimal input. We focus on the relationships created among elements by the way they are placed together whereas the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

Drawing from multiple activities to include organic farming, agroforestry, integrated farming, sustainable development, and applied ecology, Las Cordilleras is slated to become a leader in the practice of permaculture in El Retiro, Antioquia.

Starting with an avocado grove of more than 400 trees, Las Cordilleras seeks to incorporate the following core tenets as the key guidelines to its overall mission:

  1.     Take care of the earth

  2.     Take care of the plants

  3.     Take care of the animals

  4.     Take care of the people

  5.     Share the surplus

Our system will make use of:

  1. Hydroponic livestock fodder and California Red Worm vermiculture for the production of protein-rich animal feed.

  1. Through the practice of vermicomposting, our farm will produce nutrient-rich organic fertilizer known as humus which provides both nourishment and valuable microorganisms that naturally restore the properties of the soil.

  1. Aquaponics will be used for the production of pesticide-free produce and organically grown fish.

  1. Free range chicken and rabbit tractors will be used for pest control purposes, natural fertilizing needs, and the production of organic eggs and meats.

  1. Using a manure biodigestor the farm will generate methane gas to be used as fuel.

  1. Solar panels will be employed for water heating and the generation of electricity.
